What do the numbers mean?
When performing a blower door test we are looking for the induced air changes per hour. The higher the number of air changes per hour, the higher the subsequent heating and cooling costs, and the greater the potential for moisture entry, discomfort, and accompanying health problems.
Florida energy-efficient home builders typically strive for no less than 3, but no greater than 7 air changes at 50 Pascals of pressure or ACH50. In contrast, an older, leakier home may register at a rate of 5.0 to 10.0 air changes per hour. If your home measures less than 3.0 it may mean that the envelope of the home is too tightly sealed, allowing moisture to retain and build in the home creating health issues for the occupants. The results of the blower door test data will allow the builder to make any necessary changes to ensure proper air ventilation in the home or building.
Upon completion of the blower door testing a report that fulfills the requirements of the code, R402.4.1.2 is generated for the local code officials.
